Serving in the army is one of the most risky jobs there are, and to do it you have to be strong and feel passionate for what you want to defend. Frederic Henry or Lieutenant was a Red Cross ambulance driver that was serving for the army during several World War I battles. He is collecting memories he had left from war. He doesn’t want to forget about his adventures with Catherine Barkley, an English nurse that he met in Gorizia, Italy were he was working at. In one of the battles, he is shot and taken away to a hospital in Milan. Catherine looks for him desperately, and when they see each other again, he realizes that he is in love with her. They become a romantic couple that is slowly destroyed by Frederic’s drinking problem. Catherine discovers she is three months pregnant and they plan a six-week vacation for both of them. When the hospital chief finds out that Frederic has been drinking, she immediately fires him, sending him back to Gorizia. Will Catherine and Frederic see each other again?
This story is situated in Italy and Switzerland between the summer of 1916 and spring 1918 when World War I was happening. The protagonist is Frederic Henry, an ambulance driver that is crazy about a nurse he met in war when he was serving for the World War I. He feels passionate around her and he describes Catherine Barkley, the nurse, as inspired as he can, letting us see how much he loves her. Catherine Barkley is the antagonist character of the story but World War I is what threatens the characters’ lifestyle more. Even if she loves Frederic back, she’s not okay with the fact that Frederic is a soldier and less, if she’s carrying his child and maybe she won’t see him again. The main conflict of the novel is that the Germans capture Frederic and he feels that this is the moment of his departure from Earth and he thinks he won’t be able to see Catherine again. Frederic himself solves this conflict and he finds a way to save himself. Aside from this main conflict, there are several other issues like the moment when Frederic is sent back to Gorizia, but these are secondary issues that push the character into getting involved in the main conflict.
A Farewell to Arms was very interesting for me to read because it talks about a man in World War I which makes me think that he was a hero for standing up for his country and fighting for what he loved the most. He takes lots of risks to be with the love of his life and that shows me his passionate love. Ernest Hemingway adapts this story with a lot of skills due to his way of combining two major themes, love and war, and writing a romantic love story that gets interfered by war and violence. Something else I like about how Hemingway wrote his novel was that the narrator is Frederic himself, telling the story from his point of view. This isn’t very common in the novels I’ve read and I think this has been a hook that has kept me interested on the book. I would recommend this book to everyone who likes to hear the point of view of the main character talking about memories and most of all, people that like romance (love stories), because the novel introduces us to a character that does everything in his power to be with the woman he loves, even if war and violence keep getting in his way. I hope you enjoy the novel if you’re one of those people who’s passionate about love and wants to seek through the main character’s life and its issues.
